How it works

Each line is read for an amount, a unit and an ingredient (in any of 12 languages). Volumes are turned into weight with the ingredient's density, then expressed in the measures of the kitchen you choose. Temperatures in °F/°C/gas marks and pan sizes in inches/cm inside the method are converted too.

Questions & answers

Why convert cups to grams at all?

Cups measure volume, and the same cup holds 120 g of flour but 200 g of sugar. Grams remove the guesswork — and recipes from Europe are usually written in grams.

Which cup does an American recipe mean?

The US customary cup of 236.6 ml. Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand use a 250 ml metric cup, Latin America often 240 ml, and Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian recipes mean a 200 ml glass.

Does the converter change baking times?

No. When you scale a recipe, keep the temperature and check doneness a little earlier or later — time depends mostly on the thickness of the bake.
